CITIZENS

A citizen, for the purpose of this resource, is any student who is a citizen by birth. We need to remember that immigrants and refugees are not the only students who struggle with underrepresentation. Oftentimes we forget about the youth in our classrooms who were born and raised in North America, who also struggle with underrepresentation. The only difference is that they have different stories to tell.

I will address split identities, focusing specifically on intercultural rejection. Although these students were born and raised in the West, they oftentimes struggle with trying to attend to their cultural practices while attempting to fit in to Western culture. This is what creates that split identity for a lot of these students.
